Chris Orr

Senior structural draftsman, with more than 10 years’ experience working in a structural design consultancy office, plus 18 years in the process engineering sector.

When it comes to construction projects you need to know that everyone’s on the same page. The architect’s and structural engineer’s designs need to align to prevent duplication and rework.

I’m the person who makes sure this happens. I document the engineer’s design and coordinate details with the architects.

I leverage the latest technology, using it smartly, to produce a high standard of documentation and achieve results that best suit your needs. For example, typically my projects involve BIM collaboration with the project team whereby the structural model is used by the other parties for coordination and clash detection as well as to show the structure in their models. Because I consider the entire project lifecycle rather than just what’s needed to get consent from Council, many potential problems that would normally come to light during construction are detected and resolved early saving you time, money and hassle.

Over the course of my career I’ve worked manually on a drawing board, used computer aided design with AutoCAD, progressed to a 3D modelling environment with AutoCAD Architecture and migrated to Revit full-time in 2012. The experience gained from working in a traditional structural drawing office together with using the latest 3D modelling tools enables me to deliver quality structural detailed drawings while gaining all the benefits that come from collaborating in a BIM environment.

If you choose to work with me you can expect me to focus on building a good working relationship and adding value wherever possible.

Work highlights have included:
  • I’ve worked on architecturally designed buildings of various kinds as the lead draftsman including new school developments (e.g. Te Wharekura O Mauoa, Bethlehem, Tauranga), retail developments (e.g. McDonald restaurants, Stoddard Rd shopping centre), high end residential developments, hospital buildings (e.g. Kathleen Kilgour Centre radiation treatment facility, Tauranga), sporting facilities (extensions to MISH, Albany), seismic strengthening projects (e.g. old Ellerslie squash centre building upgrade), sports stadiums (e.g. Sir John Guise stadium, Papua New Guinea), multi-storey apartments and others.
  • A good example of a project on which I added value was a luxury house project on Clifton Road in Auckland. Because it was a complex structure involving multiple types of structural components to facilitate many different architectural features, the project required a high level of technical detail. We adopted a genuine BIM approach, collaborating closely with the architects enabling them to incorporate the true detail of the structural components into their design thereby providing a more accurate visualisation for the owner of the final product and a more streamlined set of details for the contractor without conflicts between the structural and architectural designs.

I enjoy spending time with my family, playing golf when I get a chance and nerdy computer/tech tinkering.
