BLIND FOUNDATION BUILDINGS: DESIGNING A SEISMIC STRENGTHENING SYSTEM THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED IN STAGES

The Foundation Buildings in Parnell are a very well preserved and maintained campus of brick and concrete buildings that have enjoyed strong tenant support for many years.

Structure Design have completed Detailed Seismic Assessments (DSA) of the Jubilee Hall, Cavit Building, Workshop Building and Pearson House. The Jubilee Hall and the Cavit Building has been
strengthened and we are currently strengthening the Workshop Building using a staged approach as the tenant vacates a space at the end of their lease.

The strengthening design has been co-ordinated with the heritage architect to ensure the works are
not detrimental to the aesthetics to the building.

Benefits of having us on the team:

  • The seismic strengthening scheme for Jubilee Hall was expensive. In order to reduce costs we removed the need to repair the roof by moving all works required to its underside. This saved our client approximately $500K.

  • The client wanted upgrades to the Cavit and Workshop buildings to be carried out over time as tenants moved out. As a result we designed a scheme that could be done bit by bit. This was challenging as we had to work through how everything fits together. Where possible, we have limited strengthening works to each single tenancy.
